thumb (12)The Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Church Mawuko Girls’ Senior High School in Ho lacks adequate infrastructure, compelling students to use the assembly hall for multiple functions. The hall serves as a chapel, dining hall, assembly hall, classroom and entertainment hall.

“When students eat and have their entertainment in the same hall where they worship, they sometimes lose reverence for God because they have become too familiar with the hall and cannot call it a chapel,” lamented the headmistress of the school, Miss Janet Kwasi .

Addressing the 30th anniversary durbar of the school in Ho on the theme, “Three decades of female education: achievements, challenges and Prospects”, she said the school did not have a science laboratory, and that had negatively affected the storage of consumables, especially chemicals that needed to be stored at a regulated temperature.

She said the school, confronted with erratic power supply, also needed dormitories, residential accommodation for staff and  potable water.

In an address, the guest of honour, the Agbogbomefia of Ho-Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, challenged all stakeholders in education to help mobilise resources at their disposal to support the development of education.

Principles and values
He said as future leaders, students should cultivate a sense of responsibility, discipline and honesty, eschew selfishness,  think positively,  persevere, be humble and principled, in addition to maintaining positive values for their growth and development.

That he said, would make them useful adults, stressing that, attributes of hard work and absolute commitment to studies were necessary for success.

He said they should develop capacity for critical thinking which is not achieved through learning by rote but on a continuous assessment that required students to prepare in advance for classes and attempt solving problems on their own to help develop their energy, comprehension, imagination and self-confidence.

Endowment fund
The Agbogbomefia donated GH¢10,000 as seed money towards the establishment of endowment for the school.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the E.P Church, Rt Rev. Francis Amenu, reiterated the call on government to handover mission schools to churches, since they had demonstrated their competence to handle such institutions.

The immediate past Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Nii Laryea Afotey-Agbo, said the government was committed to the development of female education, as well as quality education, which is crucial in nation-building and for achieving sustainable development.

He gave the assurance that issues of lack of  infrastructure in schools, would be addressed with funds provided under the GETFund.
